June 30, 2012 - Columbia, South Carolina

542

Should I try to stop this trip, knowing what I do? This is where it begins, in the torch lit night of the swamps. Lisa falls through the crack into an alternate universe’s 1880s. She takes up the name Elizabeth, leading to all the events which brought about my creation.

If it doesn’t happen, if Lisa doesn’t fall through the crack… that’d be a pretty big paradox. Not sure what would happen to me. Not sure what would happen to this universe. The whole thing might poof out of existence or something.

Do I risk that? If I stop this, everything could collapse. But if I don’t, I’ll… I’ll….

I shouldn’t be thinking these kinds of things. I know what we are. I know how weird it is that I’m feeling this way toward her. But… she’s all I have. I’ve had lovers across the centuries, but she’s the only person who really knows me. She’s seen me with my defenses down, with all the bravado gone and my weakness plain, and she still hasn’t rejected me. Is there anyone else, in all of time, who would do that?

And so what if we are the same person? Are we really the same person? Maybe we once were, but all the years have changed me so much. She’s good and kind, and I’m… I’m not. I’m nothing like that. Hell, we don’t even have the same body!

You know what? I don’t care. The whole universe can go straight to hell. I won’t let her be taken from me. I can’t lose her too. I’ll stop this.

Back to Innsmouth

Innsmouth turned out to be a lot more exciting than I expected.

The town looked abandoned when we drove up to it. The FBI did a good job clearing it out last time I was here. Whole place was a ghost town. A dank, foggy, creepy ghost town.

We had planned to spend most of the day searching the Olmstead manor, but when we went inside we found that it had been ransacked. Would’ve taken us days to sift through all the mess. Rather than attempt that, we went down to the town to see what we could find there.

I didn’t have a goal in mind, but 330 seemed to. She led the way through the streets to a church in the town square. Like the rest of the town, it was a new construction, but designed to look like the original 19th century building it was based on. The door was locked, but 330 just did her old “teleport inside and open the door” trick. That little jump seemed to strain her more than usual; she had to stop and catch her breath after opening the door. Still not completely recovered….

Superficially, the inside of the building looked like a regular church. Except when I opened the bibles and hymn books, the pages were completely blank. Which was weird but not helpful. What was helpful was when I heard some pews shifting, and saw a trapdoor opening on the floor underneath them. A man stepped out, but when he saw 330 and me, he ran back down. We chased after him, down the trapdoor and into a tunnel.

Could barely see down there. There was a light further up ahead, silhouetting the running man, but other than that it was dark. The ground was damp, and every step I took felt like I was sinking through an inch of mud. Didn’t help with running at all.

We were quickly gaining on the man, and would have caught him easily. Had we been the only ones in that tunnel, at least. More silhouetted figures jumped out of the shadows between us and the man we were chasing. They didn’t look entirely human, with oddly shaped heads and hands. When we got close enough to see details, I realized that those hands were webbed, and the heads had fins and bulbous eyes.

Alright, so… fish people. Sure why not. Their attempt to jump us backfired pretty badly when 330 and I started throwing punches. Even with only one arm, she can kick ass. And I managed to hold myself up pretty well.

There only were three of them, so it only took a few minutes before they were running away from us as well. Chase resumed, until we reached the end of the tunnel.

Small room, with a few flickering lights hanging from the ceiling and bunk beds built into the walls. The man we’d chased at first was trying to hide in the back, but when the fish men reached the room they tried hiding behind him, and then he tried hiding behind them, and so on until they gave up.

“Please don’t hurt us!” The man said. “We’ll do anything, just, just don’t hurt us!”

“Calm down.” I said. “We’re just looking for info. Who the hell are you people?”

He gladly went into a full explanation. It seems that, in the past, the citizens of Innsmouth crossbred with… whatever freaky monster things they had living in the bay. Those fish monsters who’d tried to jump us? His cousins. They’d all hidden down under the church during the FBI raid, and had been staying there ever since.

“And the Order of Dagon? Are they still hiding here too?”

“No, they fled when the town was raided.”

“Where?”

Hesitation. “He’ll kill me if I tell anyone….”

“Who will kill you?”

He didn’t answer. 330 grabbed him by the shirt and slammed him against the wall. “You really should tell us where they went.” She said.

He started panicking, trying to struggle out of her grip. “Your eye!” he half shouted.

“Well?”

“Louisiana! There’s a ritual site in the swamps there! That’s where they went!”

She dropped him and started to walk out of the room. I saw a brief flash of red in her eye, but when she blinked it was back to its blue.

“How’d you do that?” I said.

“Guess I’m just naturally intimidating.” Was her answer.

Wanted to ask them more. After all, “the swamps of Louisiana” doesn’t sound like a very specific location to me. But 330 seemed intent on leaving; Had to run to catch up with her.

Onwards to Louisiana, then.

Well 330’s definitely been in a better mood lately. It’s great seeing her as her cheerful self again. Now all I need is for her to fall madly in love with me, and everything will be wonderful again.

I’ve realized that, informative as the internet and all these records are, I won’t be able to find all the answers I need just sitting around at home. It’s time to do some hands on investigating. Which is why 330 and I are going to be heading back to Innsmouth. Perhaps the Esoteric Order of Dagon left some clues lying around the place for us to find. Or maybe we’ll just wind up searching through a lot of abandoned buildings.
I’m really hoping for the former.

June 25, 2012 - Fairfax, Virginia

537

Went to Lisa’s homemade shooting range today. Let me tell you, it took a lot of arguing to convince her to bring me along. She’s still treating me like I’m fragile or something.

As expected, I was absolutely terrible. It’s kinda hard to aim with only one working eye. And these guns all seem to have been designed with two hands in mind.

Lisa’s become pretty good, though she’ll never admit it. I guess it’s nice that one of us was managing to hit the targets.

After several more of my shots veered wildly off target, I’d had enough. Threw the gun onto the ground and spent some quality time shouting whatever offensive sounding phrases came to mind. God dammit god dammit god dammit. Why’d I have to end up like this? I’m USELESS! Can’t even fire a gun straight! Can’t do anything but lie on a couch and drink! Fuck….

At least Lisa’s… I’m… she’s… WHATEVER, trying to be understanding. She tried to console me, telling I’d get better, I just needed to get used to this, I’d be back to hitting bull’s-eyes every shot soon. After all, the future I-330 she knew could shoot fine with only one eye, right?

Oh hell no. Comparing me to that crazy sociopath? Still, she had a point. If Future Bitch can do it, there’s no way in hell I can’t as well.

Question was then, how did she do it? What’s she got I don’t? Well, a demonic arm of doom, for one. And she was a helluva lot better at time stuff than me when we last fought….

Time… you know, it’s not completely accurate for me to claim that I can see time. “See” implies vision, and it’s not that, it’s… argh, damn human language and its lack of fourth dimensional vocabulary!

Point  is, I don’t use my eyes to “see” time. Which means that it hasn’t been affected by my recent injuries.

Looking down the shooting range, I could see the timelines spreading outward…. Coming out from everything, branching out, shifting from every moment.

Pointed my pistol toward the target, and I could see the lines branching out from the gun. Hundreds of lines, containing infinite possibilities. One of those branches had to be the timeline where my bullet hit the target. Just had to focus until I could single it out….

Pulled the trigger, gun fired. Missed the bull’s-eye, but hit the target. Hell yeah.
After that, I was hitting the targets nearly every time. For the first time since I got out of that hospital, I felt like I actually could competently do something.

I was happy, Lisa was happy for me, we bought a cake in celebration because fuck yeah cake. I didn’t eat much of the cake because I was too busy talking about all the possibilities this opens up for me: mentally following the timelines to predict attacks, do crazy parkour things, etc. etc. Why the hell didn’t I think of this before? Much as I hate to admit it, maybe Grendel and Future Me were right: I have been thinking too much like a human. I suppose it just took a good existential crisis to make me wake up and realize, hey, I’ve got a sixth sense. I should probably take advantage of this more often.

Although right now it’s use is probably going to be limited to fighting very polite people who are willing to stand still and not attack me for several minutes as I try to figure out which timeline is the right one to shoot them from. Never said it was a perfect system, but with some improvement…. I’m liking the possibilities.

Recovery

I will confess. This reunion with 330 has not been the romantic wonderland I fantasized about. Not that I was really expecting one, but a girl can dream, right?

She’s having a hard time adapting to her condition. Losing an eye’s destroyed her depth perception, so she’s always having to walk carefully lest she misjudge some distance and trip. Not to mention the frequent moments when she forgets she’s missing half an arm (moments usually accompanied by the crash of something hitting the floor after she tried passing it over to a hand that’s no longer there.) She’s trying to hide her frustration, but she’s not one for emotional subtlety. Whenever any of her injuries gets in her way, I swear she looks as though she’s about to smash everything. Least she keeps a lid on it all, but I hate seeing her like this….

On an unrelated topic, I think I may have finally found a breakthrough in my research on the church. It took a while to trace ownership of the land back through all the proxies and front names, but I’ve finally found the man behind it: Jacob Olmstead. Head of the Innsmouth Reconstruction Foundation, aka the Esoteric Order of Dagon. Knew he would have some kind of connection, especially since we found a statue in his office exactly like the one from the church.

Not sure what to do with this breakthrough yet. Olmstead disappeared after the botched FBI raid on Innsmouth, so finding him won’t be easy. But at least now I’ve got something.

Discharged

330 was discharged from the hospital the other day. She’s now got an eye patch instead of a bandage over where her right eye was, so she looks a lot more like the 330 I knew. Still not exactly the same; she’s lacking the horizontal scar across her face. I think the doctors wanted to look over her more, but she was at the point where a single minute more of physical therapy and she might have tried to strangle someone.

She’s continuing her recover at my apartment. And like any good guest, the first thing she did when she arrived was open the fridge and start working her way through the drinks.

“Are you sure you should be drinking that much?” I asked her.

She waited until after she finished the bottle of wine before she answered. “My liver had a sword stabbed through it and it still seems to be fine; a little bit of alcohol isn’t going to do much more.”

Looking at the scattered empty bottles around the room told me that we both have very different definitions for “a little.” Eventually the alcohol won over and 330 fell asleep on the couch. No drunken stage to offer transition; she went from acting fully aware to knocked out in moments.

Got her a blanket, and then started cleaning up my apartment. Kinda let it fall apart after 330 appeared; I’ve been a bit distracted. I don’t know how I’ll explain all these bloodstains ….

Didn’t make much progress with that cleaning before 330’s screaming interrupted me. Ah yes, how could I forget. 330 has worse dreams then even I do. She was curled into a ball on the couch, hand over her eye patch, mumbling too fast and quiet for me to understand. Then there’d be brief moments where the mumbles would turn into screams, and she’d flail about until her screaming died back down.

During a calmer moment, I sat down next to her and started stroking her hair. The mumbling stopped, and her breathing calmed down.

Stayed like that for some time. Somehow her head eventually ended up navigating to my lap. Once, she woke up during the night. She looked at me for a long time, and then reached her hand toward my face. Said something weird….

“I can’t remember ever being as nice as you….”

She was asleep again before I could answer. Not long after, I fell asleep as well; when I woke up, 330 was already up and cleaning the mess she’d left. She apologized, I said it wasn’t a problem, both of us pretended her freak out last night never happened.

330’s begun opening up the past few days. She responds when I talk to her, and we’ve even had a few genuine conversations. It’s almost like old times, except 330 can’t do her wild gestures without tiring quickly yet. Not that it stops her from trying whenever she goes on a tirade against the hospital.

Yesterday, we’d been spending most of my visit with light hearted conversation, even some joking around. But the joy on her face shifted into seriousness after a while.
“Lisa, I…” she broke eye contact, looking up at the ceiling. “I’m… I’m sorry for… for acting the way I did the first few days. And… tha… thank you, for… for being here. For being someone I can talk to during… this.”

It was obvious that she was having to drag that apology out by force, but it was still more of an apology than I had expected. I hugged her, and while she didn’t react, this time she didn’t flinch away. “I’ll always be here for you.” I told her.

I should have just enjoyed the moment, but at the time I hoped that maybe this meant she was willing to open up a little. “If, um, if you don’t mind me asking…” I said, “what happened to you? How’d you get so beat up?”

I could tell that was the wrong thing to say when I felt her whole body stiffen up. She pulled out of my arms, and looked down at the bandaged stump below her left elbow.

“I messed up. Everyone died.” She said.

“What do you mean, everyone?”

She turned away from me, and whispered the next word so quietly I could barely hear it.

Everyone.”

Tried asking her more questions, but she didn’t say anything more for the rest of the visit. But still… everyone? What the hell is going to happen in the future?

June 14, 2012 - A God Damn Hospital

532

As I type this on the phone I “borrowed,” I am trying to stare down the flower bouquet next to me. It’s proving a formidable foe. Eventually it will break me down and I’ll be forced to read the card that came with it. But I plan to go down fighting.

Lisa dropped it off earlier today. She may well be the only person in this hospital still nice to me. That might be my fault; flipping off those nurses when I caught them staring at me might not have been the best way to make friends. But I’m sick of everyone treating me like a show. Gather round, let’s all look at the girl with the weird name who miraculously survived those suspicious injuries! If I didn’t feel so weak, I’d be out of this place in an instant. Maybe I’d go to ancient Greece, find some festival honoring Dionysus. Actually, anyplace with a lot to drink will do. Maybe that will help stop the shaking. According to the doctor, I’m suffering from “withdrawal like symptoms.”

“Well no shit, now someone get me a bottle of scotch before I start breaking peoples’ noses!”

It’s comments like that which have really made me popular here.

Maybe I could ask Lisa to sneak in something for me… no, that’d be taking advantage of her kindness. Which I’m pretty sure would be wrong.

Aaaand now I’m feeling guilty for ignoring her during all her visits. It’s not her fault things are all weird between us. Hell, she doesn’t even realize that there’s any weirdness at all, beyond the usual temporal stuff. And I doubt she’d believe me if I tried explaining that I was her from the future after my old body was destroyed and some vague unnamed entity gave me a new one. Even ignoring how outlandish that sounds, she’s never exactly been the quickest on the uptake regarding time travel.

I suppose I will read the card. Not like I’m going to be getting any other well wishers while I’m here.

Sunday, June 10, 2012

First off. I-330’s going to be alright. There was some weirdness with the news, but I’ll get to that.

There was some difficulty dealing with the red tape of this place at first. I had a pretty hard time convincing the staff that her name really was I-330. Not to mention the fact that she didn’t have any form of identification on her. At least she was able to tide things over once she woke up. Somehow.

When the doctor came to tell me that I-330 was going to survive, he took me to the side to speak privately.
“Now, you say that when you found her, she had already been bleeding for some time?” He asked me.

“Well… yes, at least, I mean, I think so.”

“Hm….” He didn’t elaborate until I asked him why he looked so thoughtful. “Depending on which artery is damaged, having an artery cut can lead to death in minutes for the average adult woman. She didn’t just have one artery cut; she had a significant number torn apart. Including vital ones such as the femoral artery. Even so, she somehow stayed alive long enough for you to call 911, an ambulance to drive over to your apartment, drive her back here, and then for us to treat her.” He rubbed the bridge of his nose. “The human body just doesn’t have that much blood in it. And that’s not even taking the serious damage to her internal organs into account. To be extremely blunt… she should be dead. I’ve seen miraculous recoveries before, but never something this extreme.”

He looked at me as if he hoped I could provide an answer to the mystery. But 330’s always been an enigma for me.

I got the opportunity to visit her a few days later. She didn’t speak, or even look at me at first. I sat by her side in silence until the visiting hours were nearly over. As I was about to leave, she grabbed my arm.

“What am I?” She whispered. I didn’t understand the question, so I kept silent. “I’ve heard the nurses talking, and I know how bad my injuries were. There’s no way I should still be alive.” For the first time during the visit, she rolled over to face me. “What the hell am I?”

I wish I could have answered her question. Told her something to take away the pain in her eye. Instead I just continued to remain silent. I nurse stopped by to say that visiting hours were nearly over, and 330 let go of my arm.

Didn’t want to leave it at that. Said the first string of words that came into my head. “It doesn’t matter what you are, you’re still I-330, and I still….” No, no, I was sounding stupid, just shut up. Gave 330’s hand a quick squeeze, but let go when she flinched. Told her I’d be back tomorrow, and then left. If only I could actually do something for her….

Yet another post written from a hospital. Although this time, it’s being written from the waiting room, not inside the hospital itself.

This morning… it seemed like a regular day. Got up, went running, had breakfast, and was preparing to look through the property records of that abandoned church when a bright flash of light came from outside. I opened my door to see what was going on. And when I did, 330 fell across the threshold into my arms.

God, there was blood everywhere. Her clothes had been soaked red, with more blood spurting from the dozens of wounds all over her body. Her hair was matted over the empty hole where her right eye would be, and her left arm ended in a jagged stump just below the elbow, with the bone clearly visible. There were burns, cut, bite marks, bruises…. What kind of hell had she gone through?

I called for an ambulance immediately. 330 was unconscious, so I laid her across my couch. Tried to stop the bleeding as best I could, but there weren’t enough bandages in my home for everything. So I just helplessly sat by her side, holding her hand and wishing the ambulance could arrive faster. She briefly woke up during the wait, but I don’t think she understood where she was. She thrashed on the couch, screaming until she passed out again.

Finally, the ambulance arrived and took her to the ER. Now I’m just waiting here, typing away until I get the news that she’ll be okay.

…. Please please please let them say she’ll be okay.

Update

Just an update on how things are going for me. This apartment is really growing on me; feels nice to have a place of my own that isn’t my old house. That building burning down was one of the best things that could have happened to me.

I’ve been keeping up with all the activities 330 got me into. Still running, still working out, still trying to keep all those self defense lessons she drilled into my head fresh. I wish I still had her as a sparring partner; I can’t bring myself to go and join a training center/dojo/whatever they call those things. Imagine that: risking my life fighting against horrible monsters? Easy. Going outside and meeting new people? Terrifying. The only social situations I seem confident in are those involving immediate danger. Just another trait I seemed to have picked up from 330, I guess. I’ve also set up a mini-shooting range out in a forest. Perhaps someday I’ll need to get myself a license so I can carry all these firearms around legally, but for now, meh.

I have been continuing my search for a new adventure as well. I haven’t seen any sign of monsters since the research facility. Not sure whether I should consider that a good thing or not. In the absence of such obvious leads, I’ve been investigating whatever weird things I can find. There was that one abandoned church with the creepy statue that 330 and I searched through way back when. I never got a chance to find out what the deal with that place was; kinda got distracted by Lupine’s crazy plan. I’ve been looking into that building heavily, trying to see what kind of dirt I can dig up on the people who use it. Haven’t found anything yet, but here’s to hoping.

Gone in the Morning

Well… 330’s gone. I woke up from a nap and found that, while I’d been asleep, she’d regained consciousness and left. No goodbye, no note, just me waking up to find the bed empty, some of my clothes gone, and $10 missing from my wallet.

I know I shouldn’t feel hurt by this. Judging from the lack of scars, or any other injuries, on her when I found her, this was a past version of 330, younger than the one I knew. But… a part of me hoped that I could be with her again. I’ve missed her, ever since the day I saw her die. Even knowing that past 330 is running around time having adventures, I wish I could be at her side again. Just like how things used to be….

Moping here is useless. Have to get my life going again, after all. The adventure’s over, time to figure out what happens next. Although after all that excitement and adrenaline, I’m not sure I could go back to the boring existence I had before. I might need to start looking for a new adventure to set out on.

And who knows, maybe if I keep searching for adventure, I’ll run into 330 again. Something to look forward to.

June 3, 2012-Fairfax, Virginia

This has been a really weird awakening.

I mean, how often do you open your eyes, and your first thought is, “I can see time.” Not very often, let me tell you.

How can I even describe the feeling? Looking at the world, and not just seeing the physical appearance, but seeing the lines of time running through it all. Everything connected, changing, constantly in motion…. It’s as if I’ve been colorblind all my life, and suddenly can see the entire spectrum. And now I’m trying to explain all these colors to other colorblind people.

The second surprise came when I started looking around. Last I remembered, I was trapped in the year 1889, being murdered by a faceless monster in a cave. When I woke up, I was in a modern (er… early 21st century modern) room, lying in a bed. And next to my bed, asleep in her chair, was… me. I was sitting next to my bedside.

That… was a bit of a shock. Took some time for me to calm down my breathing and get ahold of myself again. I had a sinking feeling of déjà vu in my chest. Quickly got out of bed and ran to the bathroom. Of course I knew where it was; I remembered this room quite clearly.

What do you do when you look into the mirror and the face you see isn’t your own?

I did recognize the face. How could I forget it? Even without the scars or eye patch, I knew who it was. I-330. But… I was the one wearing I-330’s face. And sitting in the next room….

It’s not a trick. I remember this happening. Thing is, I remember it from the other perspective. I remember, I was inside the CIA research facility, trying to stop Lupine from summoning the Slender Man. But instead of the Slender Man, I-330 was the one the ritual brought-

Looking back on it, of course the ritual couldn’t summon the Slender Man. A pan-universal creature like the Slender Man would require no assistance in coming to our universe. All it would need to do would be to isolate a divergence point, and then shift through the timelines until it arrived. This is, of course, assuming that it wasn’t already in our universe, for while there can only be one instance of the Slender Man across the multiverse, it can still utilize branching timelines to its advantage, allowing itself to exist within multiple universes simultaneously while still retaining its singularity.

I have no idea what I just said. More to the point, I have no idea how I know any of the things I just said. My brain feels like someone stuffed several textbooks into it. Quantum physics? Why do I suddenly know about quantum physics?

Back on topic. When I was still Lisa, I remember finding I-330 after the ritual ended. Nearly didn’t recognize her; she had none of the scars or injuries I knew her for. Didn’t even have her trademark suit and long coat outfit (didn’t have any clothes at all when she appeared.) She looked… clean, pure, as if she’d just arrived in the world (and now those feelings I had when I saw her feel real weird because I was talking about myself.)

I then rented an apartment, and took care of her for several days. All she did was sleep, occasionally turning or mumbling meaningless syllables. Wanted to call the authorities, but I couldn’t for the life of me think of a believable story to tell them. So I just stayed by her side, until one day I woke up and found she’d left.

Only now I learn that when I was taking care of I-330, I was actually taking care of myself. It’s a weird feeling, really. Finding out that I am my badass time traveling girlfriend has certainly put a lot of my life into a new light. There’s a lot of memories I’m looking back at and thinking, “I did WHAT with myself?”

Reading the post Antevorta put up before me has filled in some of the holes, though it’s also left dozens more questions. Lisa won’t be able to see that post, or this one. I should know; when I was her, I couldn’t see these posts. Whatever filter decides what people can and can’t read on this blog seems to not want her finding out those spoilers too early.

Right now I just want to get out of here. Find someplace isolated and really, really rethink my life, going through the several hundred existential questions I’m having to sort in my head. Stay the hell away from me… from Lisa… whatever, at least until I stop feeling like puking whenever I look back on our “relationship.” (Question: Does it count as incest or masturbation? I’ve been puzzling over that for a while now and can’t seem to figure out which would be worse….)

Though on the plus side… time travel. I know I-330 could do it, and since I’m apparently I-330, no reason I can’t. These strings of time I see everywhere now... they look like I could reach out and grab them. There’s a tingling whisper in the back of my mind, telling me I can do it. Just touch them, and pull myself along the lines to anywhere I want to go.

I can think of a few places that might be interesting to visit.
Wish me luck.

I-330

Birth

December 16, 1889, over the deserts of Arizona. Using Dr. Jeter’s airship, Elizabeth Wells and Dorian Gardner had escaped the Archangel and the massacre of Los Valle. They set out for the wilderness, chasing rumors of cracks within the universe itself. Perhaps, Elizabeth had hoped, she could escape the past the same way she had been thrown into it, falling once more into the void. Neither Dorian or Doc were told of her intention to try to travel through the crack, only knowing that it somehow represented a means to escape the impossible monsters pursuing them. The skeleton crew manning the airship didn’t even know that much. None were prepared for what was to come.

Elizabeth and Dorian spent much of the trip in each other’s company. Seeing the destruction of the town that had been like a home had affected both deeply. Elizabeth made herself hide her grief, displaying only a front of confidence. She thought that no one saw through the mask, but….

“Elizabeth?” Dorian said as they waited in the yet unfurnished passenger room.

“Yeah?” She said.

“Everything’s going to be fine, right?”

“Of course it is.”

Did his stare linger a moment too long? Did he see the lie for what it was? That doubt didn’t have time to settle in Elizabeth’s mind before she felt a familiar chill swell over her body. She leaped into motion, running through the airship as Dorian followed. Into the engine room, where waiting for them was the Slender Man.

The monster looked out of place amongst the chaotic machinery of the room. Its face pure white and featureless, its black suit without wrinkle. Lying at its feet were the eviscerated bodies of the crew who had been manning the room.

“How did it get in here?” Dorian asked, but Elizabeth offered no answer. “It can appear anywhere it wishes” is not the most confidence inspiring response one can say, after all.

Rashly, Dorian pulled out his revolver and fired at the faceless creature. His aim was true, but the bullets had no effect, vanishing into the Slender Man without creating so much as a ripple in the suit.

In response, it lifted its unnaturally long arms to either side. Its hands morphed into tentacles as dozens other tentacles grew out of its back. Those tentacles began to destroy the room, each swing cutting clean through the metal machinery.

Elizabeth knew the monster’s intent in an instant. “Oh the fucking humanity,” she muttered as she grabbed Dorian’s arm and ran out of the room. She knew enough of her history (or of the future, given the time period she was in) to understand that running wouldn’t save them from the explosion. But she had never been the type to stand passively by as death came.

The helium gas flying the airship erupted, creating an inferno which utterly destroyed it. Anyone still onboard died in moments. That’s where it could have ended, with Elizabeth and Dorian burnt alive. And in an infinite universes, it did end there. But in this universe, there were forces apart from the Slender Man at work. As the explosion was spreading, black creatures flew to the airship. Black, leathery skin, with horned faceless heads, and bat like wings which made no noise: Night Gaunts. Before the blast could reach Elizabeth and Dorian, the night gaunts flew through the airship’s frame and grabbed the two humans. Both had been rendered unconscious by the explosion.

The night gaunts had only begun to fly away with their passengers when another explosion tore the airship in two. The Slender Man stood atop the falling wreckage, surrounded by the flames. It pointed an arm towards Elizabeth, and a tentacle speared out from it. She would have been impaled, had a night gaunt not flown in the way and taken the attack instead.

The two night gaunts carrying Elizabeth and Dorian continued flying on, but the remaining dozens turned and flew back to confront the Slender Man. As they neared, it tilted its head to the side, and black hands rose out of the flames around it. The hands ripped apart the night gaunts as they flew close. Not one made it near the Slender Man alive.

But the two night gaunts with human passengers had used the time to fly away from the burning wreckage and the Slender Man. They flew across the desert, taking paths no mortal creature had traveled in millennia. Beyond the world of mankind, and into the twisted realms beyond.

Their destination was a mountain, larger than any seen by man. At the side of the mountain was an ebon door, which opened as the night gaunts approached. They dropped the two humans inside the cavern beyond, and then flew away. As the night gaunts left, the door closed, trapping the humans inside.

Elizabeth was the first to regain consciousness, followed shortly by Dorian. “Where are we?” He asked. “How did we get here?”

It didn’t take long for Elizabeth to survey the surroundings. They were in a cave stretching into the mountain. A light could be seen ahead, coming from beyond a twist in the passage. “No idea.” She replied. “Let’s go find out.”

Down this corridor they walked, until they reached the end. It was another door, carved out of the mountain’s stone, and sealed shut with massive chains. On the door was a glowing sigil, which had been the source of light they’d followed. Looking at the sigil strained the eyes of the human observers, for it seemed to somehow be both a five pointed star with an eye in the center and a branch at the same time. Dorian moved to touch the door, but was stopped by Elizabeth.

“Don’t.” She said. “See that symbol there? It’s a kind of ward. Whatever’s behind that door, it’s best that it stays behind it.”

But it was not the door which drew Elizabeth’s attention. On a wall of the cave, seeming at first no different than any other wall, a tiny crack had appeared on the stone. The crack was small, smaller than her hand, but behind it was nothingness. This was the crack in reality which she had been seeking.

Elizabeth reached to touch the crack. The ground violently shook, throwing her and Dorian off their feet. The shaking grew in intensity, until the top of the cavern was torn away, letting in the sky’s light. The Slender Man stood in the air, its tentacles cleaving the top of the mountain off.

The destruction of the mountain, however, had damaged the seal on the door. A roar echoed from behind it, followed by the ground once more shaking. The door was torn open by a clawed yellow paw, alone twice the size of Elizabeth. The walls cracked as the rest of the creature forced its way through, smashing its way into the light. The monster was a grotesque creature, its multiple heads covered in eyes and convulsing appendages along its back. Dorian screamed in instinctual terror at the sight, and even Elizabeth stumbled away from the unnaturally shrieking roar it had.

That roar was silenced when hundreds of the Slender Man’s tentacles shot downwards and pierced the monster. It cried in inhuman pain, but couldn’t struggle free from the Slender Man’s grip. The tentacles lifted it into the air on level with the Slender Man. Its blank face looked over the struggling creature for a time, then in a sudden motion, the tentacles tore the monster apart.

Dorian was enraptured by the sight of the incredible monster’s death, but Elizabeth’s eyes had been drawn back to the crack. She realized it was growing; slowly expanding to the size of her arm, then two arms widths wide, the cracks spreading from beyond the wall onto the ground.

Her attention was so focused on the growing crack that she didn’t turn from it even when the Slender Man vanished from the sky and appeared on the ground with them. Her concentration was only broken when she felt a tentacle impale her through her chest.

At first the pain was dulled by surprise. But when the Slender Man flung her off the tentacle into the air, it hit full force. Before she landed, more tentacles grabbed her. Those wrapped around her legs began to pull, straining muscle and bone until they tore. Both her legs were ripped off, and the rest of her body thrown back to the ground. She was allowed to crawl a few inches before the tentacles struck again, ripping off her right arm. Her attempts to scream came only as choked gasps. Blood was flowing freely from her wounds, and her eyes started to close as numbness spread through her body.

The Slender Man seemed content to let her bleed to death, and in the calm, Dorian ran to Elizabeth’s side. He held onto her, calling her name, but she was beyond the point of replying; even breathing had become a challenge for her. In a rage Dorian grabbed a stone for a weapon and charged at the Slender Man. He never made it close: a tentacle slashed across his stomach, spilling his organs out onto the floor. Dorian stood dumbfounded at the wound, unresponsive as a tentacle wrapped around his neck. The Slender Man lifted him into the air and then slammed him to the ground with such a force it broke his spine. Yet even this was not enough for the Slender Man, and it tightened its grip around Dorian’s neck, trying to crush out what little life was left in him.

That delay proved a mistake for the Slender Man, for while it focused on killing Dorian, the crack was growing faster. It was spreading across the floor, with lines of nothingness appearing beneath Elizabeth. The Slender Man only noticed when the cracks had reached its feet, and by then it was too late: the shard of reality had begun to fall away into the void.

Elizabeth dimly felt herself falling, falling from reality into emptiness. She was too far gone to care about her surroundings; there was no more pain, only weakness and cold.

But then the emptiness was broken by a voice, a voice so familiar it broke Elizabeth from her sleep.

“Lisa!”

Elizabeth opened her eyes, searching the emptiness for the one who called her.

“Lisa!”

There, falling toward her, was another woman. Long black hair, an eye patch over her right eye, long brown coat….

“330!” Elizabeth shouted, trying to draw back her strength.

Their hands reached for each other, and for a brief second they touched. Then black tentacles wrapped around I-330, and pulled her away. Elizabeth shouted, “330!” again in desperation, but she was gone.

Still Elizabeth reached out, desperately trying to think of a way she could help I-330. She was in trouble, and Elizabeth had to do something….

“I’m too weak….
I can’t save her….
I can’t even save myself….
If I was just stronger….”

Deeper into the void she fell. It began to consume her body, breaking it down into nothing. The further she fell, the more she was consumed, until her entire body was destroyed.

Yet her soul was never taken by the Quiet. Something was waiting in the very depths of the void, something which at the last moment saved her soul before its destruction. For untold aeons it had waited for a soul such as this, one perfect for its plans to remake the world. A new vessel would need be built for this soul, not a fragile human body, but a perfect form, a weapon, designed to take revenge on the gods.

The thing waiting in the Quiet carefully crafted its new weapon, combining its own essence with the very fabric of time and space. Human in appearance, but in reality far, far more.

The weapon was never to be completed. Before the finishing touches could be placed upon it, a gate between the void and reality was torn open. The weapon was pulled from the Quiet, back into the universe from which its soul had originated.

And on June 3, AD 2012 of the human calendar, the being known as I-330 opened its eyes for the first time.
